Student Spotlight: Madahi, Venice High School, Los Angeles, JKL Graduate 2020

Recent JKL Venice High School Alum, Madahi wasn’t able to cross the stage for graduation this year like so many of our other JKL seniors across the country. She still stands tall and full of positive energy with summer coming to end and college on the horizon!
Since the pandemic, Madahi has been able to focus on her newly discovered vegan diet and zero waste lifestyle, which she credits to what she learned in the JKL program. She explains, “when I was in the Venice JKL program it definitely opened eyes to trying new foods, being healthy in my choices and always giving back to the community. My best friend and I have been on a vegan journey and we are loving it!”
Although JKL meetings didn’t take place in person during the late spring semester, Madahi was still committed to giving back to the community. She has been collecting donations to send protective gear and school supplies for farmers and their children in the San Jose area. A once shy and non-motivated student, Madahi is now ready to take on the world and reach her full potential. This Fall, Madahi will start college with a dream to one day have a place in forensics sciences. We wish nothing but positive energy and support for Madahi aspirations.

Back to School

We are thrilled to be kicking off our JKL programming for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.
Nothing seems typical anymore and we are truly reinventing the way we are providing quality programming for our students. As we prepare to continue to teach, support, and guide our amazing high school students, it is important to note that we have a high quality group of educators providing them guidance during this virtual period.
We anticipate a great start to the school year as we will continue to create a positive, safe, productive, and empathetic online experience. We will embark on a new journey this school year and collectively we will have to navigate waters that are unprecedented. As we prepare to continue with our online platform, our focus will be to ensure that all four components of our JKL program will be provided from live fitness workouts, nutrition demonstrations, virtual guest speakers, Mental Health Monday’s with licensed therapists to virtual community service opportunities.
We are thrilled to welcome back our returning JKL staff and students and we welcome our new members! We have expanded into Charlotte, North Carolina at West Charlotte High School, in Dublin, Georgia at East Laurens High School and right here in Los Angeles at Learning Works Charter. We look forward to serving our JKL community!

Matthew and Dr. Fauci Talk Shop

Our Founder, Matthew McConaughey recently interviewed the nation’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci to discuss the coronavirus on his Instagram LIVE.
Matthew had the chance to ask Dr. Fauci questions about the virus and he received several scientific answers to help create a road map for all of us as we continue to try and move forward during these challenging times. There were some great key takeaways from the talk and you can listen to them here.
We are so proud that Matthew is always finding ways to help others. We appreciate Matthew and Dr. Fauci taking the time to continue to educate us through this pandemic. Taking care of yourself is taking care of others! The discussion ended on a hopeful note, with Matthew noting, “We can have our freedom and our party later. Right now, let’s pull together.”

Jackie Robinson Day

JKL students celebrated the anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s Major League debut in 1947.
Typically held each season on April 15th, it was rescheduled this year for August 28th. Our students decorated signs in his honor as they watched the game in support of our partners the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers.

Camila’s Tips: Baked Buffalo Cauliflower

This recipe is very easy to make, and it is addictive!! Once you start snacking, we promise you won’t be able to stop. We do have a couple tips we picked up for you when you make this dish:
First, cut your cauliflower into large pieces, approximately 1 inch to 1.5 inches in diameter (the pieces will shrink when cooked).
Second, make sure you remove any excess almond flour pieces before placing the cauliflower on a baking tray (they will burn if left on the pan!).
Ingredients:
• 1 head organic cauliflower
• 1 cup almond flour
• 1 egg, or vegan egg substitute
• 1/2 cup Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
• 1 tbsp garlic powder
• 1 tbsp onion powder
• 1 pinch salt and pepper
Instructions:
1. Pre heat the oven to 400°F.
2. Cut cauliflower into 1-1.5 inch pieces and place in a large bowl.
3. Prepare the dipping mixture by putting the egg (beaten) in one bowl and the almond flour, garlic powder, onion powder and salt and pepper in another bowl.
4. Pour the egg over the cauliflower and mix well, making sure each piece is coated.
5. Pour the almond flour mixture over the cauliflower and mix, making sure each piece is coated well.
6. Place the cauliflower on the baking sheet.
7. Bake for 25 minutes, or until pieces are a little crispy on the edges. Careful not to let the pieces burn!
8. Remove cauliflower from oven and place pieces back in a large bowl.
9. Pour the Frank’s Red Hot Sauce on top, making sure pieces are totally coated.
10. Place the cauliflower back on the baking sheet and in the oven in 8 minutes.
11. Broil on high for 1 minutes.

We are so excited that our founders Camila and Matthew McConaughy were included in Town & Country Magazine’s Philanthropy Summit with a mission to spread hope, celebrate heroism, and better the world by effecting positive change!
We are so grateful to everyone who tuned in and so proud to share our 360 approach to our JKL afterschool fitness and wellness program, providing a safe place for our youth where they can learn the tools for a better life. During the summit, our very own Program Manager, Leon Clayborne, had a great conversation with JKL Alum from Animo Inglewood Charter High School in Los Angeles, Maria Gutierrez Watson!
Maria was recently featured in Town and Country’s Philanthropy Issue alongside Matthew and Camila. She has since graduated from UCLA and is now a teacher in Chicago. We are so touched to have had the opportunity to share the incredible work of our foundation and so proud of Maria for all of her accomplishments!

JKL Partners With Homeboy Industries

Homeboy’s overarching goal is to see individuals heal from trauma. Over their 30-year history, they have seen time and time again the way that new experiences outside of the neighborhood help their program participants along their journey of healing.
For most justice-involved and gang-involved youth that they’ve worked with, we know summer to be a particularly vulnerable time for street violence in the absence of access to what some kids experience as typical summer opportunities.
Homeboy leaders lead a variety of experiences throughout the year for program participants to experience life outside of their trauma and their neighborhoods. They aim to provide opportunities to learn in spaces one has not experienced before, to find serenity in spaces of nature, to process and reflect surrounded by beauty and art, and to grow confidence and imagination while in kinship and community with other participants. JKL is excited to be a part of their summer programming reaching more than 40 of their youth for a 6 week summer programming. We have been providing part of our JKL programming by offering their youth yoga, calisthenics classes, hip hop classes, nutrition demos and tips on managing anxiety. We are proud to be partnering with such an amazing organization!

What Are You Grateful For?

“I am grateful for this program and that I have the opportunity to be on a call with everyone and talk about myself and about how other people are doing. It is nice to remember that I am not the only person in the world. I appreciate this time I have to self-reflect about the decisions I have made.”
– Kiryana (Morse HS, San Diego)

  – – – –

“I am grateful for all my teachers and administrators because of all the effort they’ve put in to reach out and communicate with their students and for all the leniency and understanding that they’ve had during this time.”
– Brandon (Huntington Park HS, Los Angeles)

  – – – –

” am grateful for the people who are supporting me in this hard time that I am going through right now. It’s nice to have a support system.”
– Geneva Rushton (John Adams HS, Cleveland)

JKL Instructor Spotlight

Meet Cameron David, one of our amazing instructors from the JKL Program at Venice High School in Los Angeles! He has been busy this summer turning his passion for hiking into a soon to be nonprofit organization.
Cameron explains, “I started hiking years ago to get away from the city and work on my mental health and hiking helped me. When you are submerged in nature you are forced to be with yourself”. Cameron established “The Noir Nature Guide” after getting an overwhelming response from people who were curious about the hikes after he would post about them on social media.
The requests eventually turned into the Noir Nature Guide, a guided tour through the many mountains and trails in Southern California. The trips also include ice breakers, physical warmups, lunch, local history lessons and gratitude circles. You can catch Cameron leading 2-3 guided hikes a month. Be sure to check him out at @thee_noirnatureguide for more information.

Student Spotlight

We had the pleasure of catching up with Duane, a sophomore from our New Visions JKL program in NYC.
Duane is an inspiring visual artist who loves to draw people. He also enjoys listening to heavy metal music and constantly challenging himself with different workouts. Duane was once the new kid on the block, but JKL has helped him to develop friendships in a safe and fun environment.
Last semester, Duane enjoyed learning how to ice skate, sharing in the gratitude circle, giving back to his community and learning the importance of incorporating fruits and veggies into his diet. Duane dreams of becoming a professional graphic designer and architect and we are certainly rooting for him to achieve his goals!

JKL Founders Give Back During COVID-19

As we work to navigate through these uncertain times, our just keep livin Founders Matthew and Camila McConaughey continuously inspire us with their widespread relief efforts.
Perhaps you’ve seen one of Matthew’s public service announcements urging Americans to stay home, sharing encouraging words about taking care of each other, or masquerading as “Bobby Bandito” in a tutorial for making a DIY face mask to stay safe because “we’ve got more livin to do”!.
Camila has combined staying fit with giving back through her frequent Instagram LIVE workouts alongside Margie Pope, Director at The Studio CROSSFIT Shoreditch, which are free but encourage donations to JKL’s fundraising campaign. A big thanks to Margie for sharing her time and talents! You can join the fun by visiting Camila’s Instagram page!
Additionally, Matthew and Camila have teamed up with Bethenny Frankel’s BStrong organization to provide 80,000 masks to first responders in Austin, Louisiana and across the country.
And we can’t forget Matthew’s surprise virtual visit to the residents of senior living home, The Enclave at Round Rock, during which he hosted a game of bingo and served up an abundance of smiles!

We’re so proud of our Founders for their big hearts and dedication to giving back during this challenging time!

Mack, Jack & McConaughey 2020 – The Show Must Go On

Although COVID-19 made it impossible for Mack, Jack & McConaughey (MJ&M), our largest annual fundraiser, to be an in-person event this year, we decided that the show must go on!
On April 23rd, along with event co-hosts, Mack & Sally Brown and Jack & Amy Ingram, Matthew and Camila hosted a small virtual event for our incredible sponsors. It was a special evening featuring an amazing lineup of music from Grammy Award-Winning Singer/Songwriters and a LIVE performance by this year’s headliner, multi-platinum, award-winning musician and CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, Luke Combs.
The group enjoyed songs by artists who have supported MJ&M over the past eight years including Toby Keith, John Mellencamp, Butch Walker, Bobby Pinson, Wade Bowen, Jon Randall & Jessi Alexander, Lori McKenna and Eric Church. They also had the pleasure of welcoming new friends Ryan Bingham, Waylon Payne and Emerson Hart into the MJ&M circle. The evening was capped off with four songs performed LIVE by Luke Combs, and, as is tradition with MJ&M, our very own Jack Ingram playing his song, “Goodnight Moon.”
In Matthew’s words, “The caliber of talent at MJ&M each year continues to humble us.” We want to give a huge thank you to all of the artists who shared their talents, as well as our loyal donors and supporters who once again helped us raise much-needed funds for five worthy organizations empowering children: CureDuchenne, Dell Children’s Medical Center, HeartGift, just keep livin Foundation and The Rise School of Austin.
If you are interested in making a donation to help MJ&M’s beneficiary organizations, including the just keep livin Foundation, you can still get involved. Text “MJM” to 24375 to #EmpowerKids!

JKL Zoom Session with Kevin Love

As we all adjust to the new social distancing norms, we’ve been hosting regular Zoom calls to check-in on our students and faculty, and we’re excited to share that one of our most special calls included five-time NBA All-Star Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers!
During a Zoom session with our Cleveland just keep livin students and teachers, Love shared words of inspiration and encouragement. An especially touching moment came when he shared his list of “160 dreams”, telling our students that “dreams don’t have deadlines” and sharing with them the importance of “falling in love with the journey” of creating goals! Love’s words motivated our students on every level, inspiring them to “attack each day” while also focusing on maintaining balance.
We LOVE working with the Kevin Love Fund and are so grateful his foundation sponsors the JKL program at John Adams High School. Thank you again to Kevin Love for sharing his knowledge with our JKL kids, and for working so hard to empower our youth by removing the stigma from mental health issues, especially during these challenging and uncertain times!

Camila’s Tips: Big Batch Beans Vegetarian or Meat Style

We have to keep things easy and on a budget during these times and maximize what we have at home, so sharing with you an easy recipe for black beans.
You can follow the recipe or make swaps for any of the ingredients and still have a delicious meal that is all your own.
You can serve rice + beans on their own, vegetarian style or throw an egg on top Brazilian style. You can add some meats that you may have in your freezer. There really isn’t a wrong way to make these! If you aren’t getting enough flavor, I can show you how to add some simple ingredients you probably already have at home to kick up the taste!
These are a Brazilian household staple and a great way to get a big boost of protein on a budget and feed the whole family without a trip to the store. Stay safe everyone.

Student Spotlight: Brianna, Longview High School, Texas

Sophomore student, Brianna, from our Longview JKL program is embracing her creative energy and making her mark on campus.
Before joining JKL, Brianna struggled with self-confidence and the ability to be proud of her own art. “Since the start of our JKL program last fall, I have watched Brianna grow into a confident and outgoing young lady who has had perfect attendance” – Ms. Clark.
Brianna is an aspiring young artist who is gaining inspiration from the weekly gratitude circles, CrossFit workouts and peer to peer motivation. The just keep livin program has provided a safe and encouraging space for Brianna to share her passions and be accepted for who she is. Things like volunteering at her church, anime art and love for Korean pop music culture are all embraced.
After high school, Brianna would like to become a veterinarian and travel to Korea! We can’t wait to see Brianna blossom into an amazing person!

JKL Students “Have Courage” With HITRECORD

Our just keep livin students at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles were lucky enough to get a visit from the team from HITRECORD
HITRECORD is an online collaborative platform started by the actor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, where people all over the world come together to collaborate on creative projects including short films, writing, music, and photography. The idea behind HITRECORD is for creativity to build upon itself in a virtual space.
At Fairfax, students were shown a few writing prompts based on our jkl monthly quote about having courage, and were able to use the prompts as jumping off points to let their creativity come through. Then the students took turns reading each other’s pieces aloud, thus showing courage themselves.
We loved seeing our students open up and expand their horizons to the HITRECORD community. We look forward to future collaborations!

Baby2Baby Community Service Project

Three of our Los Angeles JKL programs have visited Baby2Baby in Culver City this past month to help volunteer!
Baby2Baby provides children living in poverty, ages 0-12, with diapers, clothing and all the basic necessities that every child deserves. Our students always enjoy supporting this amazing organization whether it was sorting donations or filling necessities for children facing emergency situations such as fires or entering the foster care system. We are proud to partner with this organization and look forward to continuing to support their efforts!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Hurricane Katrina, Trayvon Martin, as well as many others.

Voices of Parkland Screening

just keep livin programs in Los Angeles had the very special opportunity to attend a screening for the documentary, Voices of Parkland, thanks to the Brady Campaign, a gun violence prevention movement.
It was an unforgettable night at the Ace Hotel alongside Team ENOUGH LA. The documentary features 35 testimonials from those who experienced the tragic shooting at Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. We are so grateful that our students were able to experience this and hear from the survivors who had the strength and courage to share their stories.

Student Spotlight: Nykeevia, Carter High School, Dallas, Texas

First year transfer student, Nykeevia at Carter High School in Dallas, is embracing the JKL program to enhance her overall high school experience.
Upon arrival to Carter HS, Nykeevia felt left out as a new student because she didn’t have the opportunity to establish new friendships. Once JKL instructor, Coach Cross, made Nykeevia aware of the program, all of her anxieties started to go away. “Nykeevia is a very friendly and helpful JKL student.
She still tends to be shy, but once she warms up she fits right in with her JKL peers”- Coach Cross. Nykeevia has found a voice in the JKL program by expressing herself during the Gratitude Circle which has helped her build new friendships. Nykeevia loves the positive environment, healthy nutrition demos, and the motivation her peers provide her during workout activities.
Nykeevia is on a mission to improve her eating habits and incorporate fitness training into her daily life. She is drinking more water and removing chips from her everyday diet. We are so happy to have Nykeevia join the JKL family and can’t wait to see her blossom in the program!

A VIP Evening in Austin!

On January 15th, 100 just keep livin students from our four afterschool programs in Austin enjoyed a special evening with our Founders, Camila and Matthew McConaughey!
The high schoolers were pampered with a Braid Bar, Glitter Bar and Mobile Barbershop before their private screening of Star Wars! Matthew and Camila were on-hand to welcome the students as they hopped off the bus, and Matthew spoke to the kids about the importance of “staying curious,” which was the “Monthly Quote” for January.
And what’s a movie night without some yummy snacks? The kids flipped for the assortment of mini cupcakes from Sprinkles, the delicious popcorn provided by AMC Theatres, and the boxes of chicken sandwiches and coleslaw generously donated by Raising Cane’s which they grabbed for the bus ride home.
We ended the night with a moving and heartfelt Gratitude Circle. We’re so thankful to all of the vendors who donated to help make this night so much fun for the kids!

Camila’s Tips

We love a good homemade pizza (yum!) and are always looking for ways to make more creative and healthy versions of this classic!
Now, we know gluten-free or cauliflower crust is all the rage lately, but have you ever tried making mini pizzas with an eggplant base? It is soooo yummy and savory … Just bake your eggplant in the oven, and simply add the ingredients on top before a quick broil.
To make ours, we used fresh basil from our garden, tomatoes, organic tomato sauce and provolone cheese … But the best part about this recipe is you can add as many toppings as you want! So feel free to get creative. This recipe is a great snack, dinner option or even party appetizer for both kids and adults!
Ingredients:
• 2 large eggplants
• 24 oz jar organic tomato sauce
• 20 slices provolone (or mozzarella) cheese
• 3-4 oz fresh organic cherry tomatoes, sliced
• organic basil, as desired
• 1/2 tsp himalayan salt
• pepper flakes, optional
• 1 cup each additional topping, as desired
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
2. Slice the eggplant into 1 inch thick round pieces.
3. In two baking trays arrange the sliced eggplants.
4. Sprinkle the Himalayan salt and bake for 15-20 minutes.
5. Remove the bake eggplant from the oven and turn your broiler on.
6. Spread 1 tablespoon of tomato sauce over each eggplant round followed by one slice of provolone.
7. Arrange some fresh spinach and cherry tomatoes over the cheese and broil for 3-5 minutes.
Make sure you keep a close look while the eggplant is under the broiler as they can burn really fast.

Student Spotlight: Yomerly: Brooklyn School for Social Justice, New York

Meet Yomerly, a sophomore student from our new JKL program at the Brooklyn School for Social Justice in New York.
Yomerly, a once shy girl that lacked confidence and friends, has found her safe haven within the JKL program. She is an inspiring poet and avid journaler. Yomerly reports that socializing is a bit easier with the help of the gratitude circle and peer-to-peer support during fitness activities.
“Yomerly is a respectful and highly motivated young woman. She has attended every JKL meeting and represents the result of a student who truly immerses themselves in the JKL program.”- Ms Chu. We are excited to see Yomerly thrive with our JKL program for years to come.

One Voice

This Holiday season, our Los Angeles JKL programs brought over 100 students to volunteer for the One Voice Holiday Food Program.
This was our 10th year partnering with One Voice at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica. While there, we sorted and packaged food for 2,500 families living in poverty in the Los Angeles area. Our students had a great time listening to holiday music, sweating with smiles and working in teams to get everything done.
We are so grateful for this partnership and love providing such a powerful community service opportunity for our JKL students. We are looking forward to next year’s event!

Let’s All Go To The Movies

On Monday, December 16th, 75 of our JKL students were lucky enough to attend a pre-release screening of the powerful movie, Just Mercy.
This must-see film tells the true story of Walter McMillian (played by Jamie Foxx), who with the help of young defense attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) appeals his murder conviction. At the conclusion of the movie, students got the opportunity to hear the inspiring life story of Adnan Khan who is Executive Director of Re:Store Justice, an organization that aims to reform the justice system. We are so grateful to AMC, film producer Scott Budnick, and Warner Bros Studios for making this happen and giving our students a night to remember!

ELSA Ranch Cleanup

Our Huntington Park JKL program experienced a community service event “ranch style”!
On November 16th, 20 students from HP assisted in beautifying the ELSA ranch in Agoura Hills, CA. ELSA (Experience Learning Support with Animals) is a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with special needs and at-risk youth through the benefits of equine-assisted activities in a ranch setting.
They opened up their ranch for our students to enhance a few areas on their grounds. We spruced up the chicken coop, demolished the fence surrounding the horse coral, and weeded and cleaned out the garden area. Students and staff worked hand and hand seamlessly together to accomplish a much appreciated ranch cleanup with smiles and laughter.
The event was a huge success and ended with a picnic and making homemade lemonade. We are looking forward to collaborating with ELSA in the near future to provide more community service opportunities for our JKL students.

After School Snacks!

Rachel Beller MS, RDN
Take your after school snacks to another level, by upgrading your plain crackers with these cracker combos.
Not only will you be adding flavor to your snack, but you’ll also be adding additional nutritional value with each ingredient— nut butters add protein, cacao nibs and cinnamon add antioxidants, red pepper flakes add beta carotene and vitamin A, and parsley adds even more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Can you believe all the nutrition packed into an easy after school snack?! Best thing is they are easy to assemble and require very little clean up!

Go ahead and smear the following toppings onto whole grain bread or crackers:

• 1 tablespoon peanut butter + generous shakes of Ceylon cinnamon
• 1  tablespoon teaspoons peanut butter + 1 teaspoon raw cacao nibs + cinnamon
• ½  avocado, mashed + drizzle of balsamic vinegar + pinch of red pepper flakes
• 2 tablespoons hummus + few kalamata olives, chopped + sprinkle of fresh parsley, chopped
•  1 tablespoon pesto sauce +  cherry or grape tomatoes, halved

Student Spotlight: Folasade, Carver High School; Houston, TX

Meet Folasade, a senior at Carver high school in Houston, who is on a mission to spread positivity and encouragement! The Carver JKL program is completing their 1st semester and has been making strides with recruitment and peer to peer mentorship.
We can thank Folasade for taking the lead in setting the tone for the JKL program on the Carver campus. “Folasade thoroughly enjoys helping others and serving our community. She is the first to volunteer to help with community service and help recruit her peers for the program” – Ms Davis Cook.
Before the JKL program came to Carver, Folasade was involved in the Theater program and warriors for Christ clubs after school. She is such a super star that she still finds the time to participate in those clubs and in jkl without missing a session. When asked why she chose to join the jkjl program she replied “I wanted to be part of a community that will help me accomplish my fitness goals and support my passion for community service”.
After high school, Folasade would like to receive a nursing degree from her dream college – John Hopkins University – and become a pediatrician. We are so excited to see where her aspirations take her!

Tennessee Titans Annual Coat Drive

On Sunday, November 24th, our Nashville jkl programs gathered to lend a helping hand for the Tennessee Titans Annual Coat Drive.
Prior to the Titans-Jaguars game, fans were encouraged to participate in the team’s annual coat drive. New and gently used coats of all sizes were dropped off at one of several collection sites outside of the Nissan Stadium where our JKL students were stationed to collect them.
The following evening, our students gathered back at the stadium where they sorted 650 coats! After they finished sorting, the students were treated to a tour of the stadium and locker room! The evening concluded with a dinner hosted by the Titans organization.
The coats were picked up by six very thankful local non-profit organizations, who will in turn distribute them to the communities they serve. Giving back is a huge part of our programming and we are so grateful to the Tennessee Titans for including us in this worthy cause!

Animo City of Champions visit The Tree of South LA. For a Yoga Class

It was a sunny, fall afternoon when students from our Animo City of Champions JKL program took a mile jog from their campus to the Tree of South L.A. for a private yoga session.
It was the first time ever taking a yoga class for more than half of the students who attended. The Tree of South L.A. provides the perfect environment to elevate your yoga practice. The session was led by a great instructor, Amisha the Unicorn, who kept the students engaged, excited, and challenged by new and familiar movements.
The session included basic yoga movements with a current HipHop soundtrack. Once finished, students were energized and wanted more! We are grateful for our relationship with the Tree of South L.A. and look forward to bringing more JKL students soon!

JKL Students Learn About Healthy Snack Swaps

Pilates instructor Lauren Gold, who is currently studying to be a Registered Dietician, stopped by our JKL program at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles recently to help share her knowledge with our students.
She taught our teens about how to read nutrition labels and helped explain the difference between natural sugars and added sugars. She also presented some helpful ideas about healthy swaps for students’ favorite snacks, for example, Triscuits instead of Takis!
Students loved sampling the food she brought along, including Larabars and apples dipped in almond butter! We look forward to welcoming Lauren back soon!

FIT TIP by JZ Fitness

The desire to move more decreases in the winter so here are some tips to move more:
1) Set an alarm every hour to get up and walk. It could be a 2 minute walk. This will get you to avoid sitting for long periods of time, thereby decreasing joint stiffness and lower back pain.
2) Consider getting a step tracker app on your phone. If you see it, you can change it. To be considered active, you need at least 10,000 steps a day
3) Find an accountability partner. Classes are great for this as the same folks tend to workout at the same time each day so if you commit to any particular class time and don’t show, people will wonder where you are. But if classes aren’t your deal, then consider telling a friend or fitness enthusiast to hold you accountable to a goal you set. Perhaps that goal is to workout 3 days a week. If you schedule it on your calendar, show up for it. You are the only one who can ultimately make it happen.
Dive into the holidays with the expectation to enjoy your family and friends but make sure you move, no matter how many holiday parties are on the calendar. Because motion is lotion to the joints and to the mind!

During the release, students said prayers, spoke of unity within the jkl program and wished for a positive change in America.

Helping Our Students Succeed in the Game of Life

Our just keep livin students at North East High School in Austin were thrilled to receive a donation that will help them succeed not only on the playing field but in the game of life, as well!
One of our supporters, Lee Silber, an author and motivational speaker, was going to be participating in a conference in Austin and wanted to tie in a charitable component to his conference participation. He came up with the idea of sending “sports equipment with a message” to jkl teens.
He had the conference attendees write “life advice” and positive messages of encouragement and support on the football, basketballs and volleyballs. We were so touched by this creative and impactful donation!

Camila’s Tips

A CHALLENGE FROM CAMILA + WOMEN OF TODAY: GENEROSITY DINNERS!
First, you bring a group of people together for a dinner. You can have a potluck, or take turns hosting. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate — Just a meal where you all sit down together and enjoy. Each dinner guest comes to the meal with two things: First, a donation. It can be any amount (whatever they are able to do). Second, each person comes with a donation destination in mind. It might be a neighbor down the street who is struggling to pay for child care, or someone they know who is going through medical treatment … It can be any situation that speaks to your heart!
As the dinner goes on, you all talk about who you think in your community could use a little extra help. At the end of the dinner, you all take a vote on where you think the money collected that night should go.

Student Spotlight: Tim, East Austin College Prep Program

Recent just keep livin graduate, Timothy from our East Austin College Prep Program, is ready and headed to the Airforce! Before joining the jkl program, working out wasn’t something Timothy enjoyed. After participating in the jkl program for 4 straight years, he realized that the program was actually a driving force to make his dreams a reality.
Timothy completed his first half marathon, ran numerous 5k’s, started drinking more water, opened up during the gratitude circles and lost over 20 pounds. Timothy’s dedication to the jkl program helped shape his life, while keeping him motivated throughout his high school career. Program instructor, Jaqueline Vidal, explains, “Tim, attested that what truly got him through those rough nights was thinking about his family and the jkl program.
It was incredibly humbling that Timothy chose to come back only a few days after his graduation to join us for his last jkl session.” Timothy has dreamed of being a pilot since childhood and is taking all the necessary steps to make that dream come true. We are so proud of Timothy as he makes the strides to reach his goals!

Teacher Training 2019

On June 27th and June 28th, we hosted 80 of our just keep livin instructors who participated in another successful Teacher Training.
The event kicked off with a kayaking outing in Marina Del Rey, followed by a Happy Hour which allowed for instructors to mingle, see fellow veteran instructors, as well as to meet our new jkl instructors.
The Happy Hour consisted of fun games such as Jenga, Corn Hole and Connect 4. After a night of fun, the teachers were ready for full training the next day. This year’s theme of “A Well-Oiled Machine” provided the platform for all 36 of our programs to come together to share best practices, discuss programming, curriculum, and most importantly get re-energized for the 2019-2020 school year.
We added a component of discussing the work we have been doing with regards to our students’ Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and were able to share some of the data results from our post surveys. We took time to honor the loving memory of Rebecca Pfleger, a longtime JKL teacher from Dallas who passed away suddenly in January. We invited Rebecca’s brother and cousin out to the training to share a few words about Rebecca. It also gave us a chance to let her family know how much we appreciated the 8 years of loving care that she provided the Sam Houston jkl program.
We continue to hold Rebecca’s memory and her family close to our hearts.

Field Trip to Broad Museum

This summer, jkl students and staff from Animo Inglewood High School in Los Angeles had the chance to experience the world famous museum, “The Broad”.
Our dear friend of the Foundation, Cece Karz, who is an art historian and collector of contemporary art led an amazing tour for our jkl students. Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power 1963-1983 was a definite highlight. Students learned about so many African American artists like Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, William T. Williams and many more who used minimalism and abstraction techniques.
The students also enjoyed the mind altering experience of Yayoi Kusama’s infinity mirror and Jeff Koon’s huge Balloon Dog.
