Welcome Back JKL Students & Staff!
We hope you had a restful and amazing summer – we’ve missed you and can’t wait to kick off the 2025-2026 school year together!
To our new sophomores, juniors, and seniors: this is going to be a very special year. You’re stepping into a community built on strength, growth, and gratitude – one shaped by the students and classes before you, who paved the way for more opportunities and expanded programming. Now it’s your turn to carry the torch forward.
To our incredible JKL instructors: with another year under your belt, you return wiser, more motivated, and ready to make an even greater impact. JKL thrives because of you all. Your energy, commitment, and heart make everything we do possible!
This year, let’s show what JKL is all about. Let’s work out harder, eat cleaner, nourish our mental wellness, give back with purpose, and practice gratitude daily.
And to the Class of 2026: we’re cheering you on every step of the way. We believe in you, and we’re confident you’ll continue our tradition of 100% graduation for JKL seniors!
Let’s make this year unforgettable and let’s just keep livin – our way.
Program Highlights
JKL x Washington Commanders
On Monday, August 18th, twenty of our JKL Ballou students had the unforgettable opportunity to attend the Washington Commanders vs. Cincinnati Bengals Monday Night Football game! For many of our kids, this was their very first NFL experience and the excitement was electric. It was a night full of awe, energy, and lasting memories. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this special moment possible!
JKL Student Spotlight: Angel from Chavez High School
Meet Angel, a ‘Just Keep Livin’ student from our Chavez High School program in Houston. We had the pleasure of meeting Angel at our Academy’s Back-to-School activation. What made Angel stand out was that we discovered he was using his Academy gift card to purchase items for his younger brothers. It was such a selfless act, showcasing Angel’s character. Over the past year, Angel has enjoyed the physical fitness element of JKL and learning how to be disciplined with running goals and the training that comes with it. However, community service events were something near and dear to his heart. “I like being able to give back to people in need. When I was young, my family was struggling, so I know how it feels to be in need. Community service made me feel like a better version of myself”. Angel, like many of JKL students, has found purpose in our program and looks forward to Junior year to explore more of the Houston area through JKL field trips, community service activations, and any 5k race he can participate in.
“When I first met Angel, he tended to keep to himself. I saw a change in his character and how he holds himself since he joined JKL. He has become more confident; he strives to be a better version of himself and is always willing to be a helping hand to others. “-JKL instructor Ms. Castillo.
However, as a junior, Angel is weighing his post-high school options of attending college to become a civil engineer or joining the Marines. Whatever the choice is, we are here to support Angel and see him shine!

JKL x Academy Sports & Outdoors
This summer, Academy Sports & Outdoors Collaborated with our Dallas, Austin, and Houston just keep livin programs to provide a back-to-school shopping experience for 60 of our Just Keep Livin students. This fantastic opportunity came at the right time for many of our students’ families, providing a much-needed back-to-school shopping relief. Each student received a $200 gift card to help with the beginning of the school year needs, from clothing to sports gear and equipment. Academy Community Relations Manager Kaci Hancock helped lead the way, alongside JKL Director of Community Impact Leon Clayborne, as they hosted these experiences on three consecutive days. The shopping experience was fun and exhilarating, as we watched students in disbelief as they received the gift cards, making difficult decisions on what color shoes to get or which baseball glove fit the best. We concluded each activation with our signature keep livin’ gratitude circle. We are deeply and personally grateful to Academy Sports & Outdoors, as this partnership has exceeded our expectations and made a significant difference in the lives of our students and their families. We are excited to partner for more events in the future!
WISE Scholarship Program Update
This past summer, our WISE Scholarship students exemplified the values of drive, initiative, and purpose by actively seeking out opportunities to grow, serve, and explore their futures. Instead of taking a break, they leaned into learning — and the results have been nothing short of inspiring.
Dalila continued to deepen her connection with the Marine Mammal Center after her initial job shadow experience this past spring. She now volunteers three days a week, giving tours and educating the public about sea lions and their vital role in the ecosystem. Her passion for marine life and environmental education is making a lasting impact in her community.
Fabian took his future into his own hands by arranging a summer job shadow with the Program Director of West LA College’s Sports Medicine department. There, he’s gaining hands-on experience supporting athletes, including the Wildcats, both on and off the field. In addition, Fabian teamed up with fellow scholar Jacob A. to join the Youth Business Alliance’s summer program, diving into entrepreneurship, marketing, and essential workforce skills. Together they were able to get a tour of Selena Gomez’s makeup line, Rare Beauty and learn about the behind the scenes career opportunities.
Jacob A. used his summer to its fullest potential, participating in not one, but three enrichment programs: the Youth Business Alliance Summer Program, a 3-week entrepreneurship course at El Camino College, and engineering program at Cal Poly. His commitment to exploring both business and STEM pathways reflects his strong ambition and versatility. He is not one to rest and instead seeks out challenges and new ways to continue learning.
These WISE scholars are setting the bar high, demonstrating what it looks like to take ownership of their futures. JKL and the WISE team are incredibly proud of their initiative, hard work, and continued commitment to personal and professional growth. This summer was just one chapter in their journey — and we know the best is yet to come.
