Program Highlights: Celebrating Black History Month

Students at JKL Crockett High School in Austin, TX worked on a Black History Month project focused on influential leaders who have shaped history. Each student selected a historical Black figure, researched their impact, and presented a short speech along with interesting facts to the group. Figures highlighted included Rosa Parks, Mae Jemison, Ruby Bridges, and Thurgood Marshall. Students practiced their public speaking skills while learning about courage, perseverance, and leadership. It was also Bring a Friend Day, which was a great success and brought extra energy and excitement to the program.

Student Spotlight: Kelly Navarro

Student Spotlight: Kelly Navarro

Kelly Navarro was raised in Dallas, but her strength comes from her family’s deep roots in Monterrey, Mexico – roots built on resilience and sacrifice. One of her earliest challenges came when she started school in McAllen, surrounded by English while Spanish – the language of her home – was left outside the classroom. She was scared, unsure, but determined, learning to adapt quickly while hiding her fear behind courage far beyond her years. As she grew older, being called “smart” and “capable” became a quiet burden. She felt pressure to be perfect, to stay strong, and to carry stress in silence, believing that struggling meant failing.

Everything changed in high school when just keep livin entered her life. JKL became her safe place – the first space where she didn’t have to pretend she was okay. It taught her to slow down, breathe, and speak honestly about what she was feeling. Through this community, she learned that vulnerability is strength and that she was never meant to shoulder everything alone. JKL didn’t just support her – it helped her heal and gave her a family that stood by her during her hardest moments.

Today, as a high school senior, Kelly looks back with pride at the girl who once believed she had to be unbreakable. She survived moments that felt impossible and grew into someone who chooses balance over burnout and honesty over perfection. With the love of her family, the support of her friends, the power of her culture, and the life‑changing guidance of the just keep livin Foundation, Kelly now steps forward with confidence, gratitude, and hope – knowing she will never walk her journey alone.

March Wise Scolarship update

WISE Scholarship Program Update: California Lutheran University Visit

WISE students recently had an inspiring college exposure experience during a campus visit to California Lutheran University. During the tour, students explored residence halls, visited classes, and engaged in meaningful conversations with faculty members about academic pathways and campus life. A highlight of the visit was the opportunity to meet and speak with the university’s president. This immersive experience helped students envision their future in college and strengthened their confidence as they continue working toward their academic and personal goals.
