Program Highlights: JKL Los Angeles Annual Field Day

This May, the just keep livin Foundation brought together over 100 students from across our Los Angeles programs for our annual JKL Field Day – a day filled with movement, connection, and pure energy. Hosted once again at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, we are incredibly grateful to the LA Galaxy Foundation for their continued support in making this special day possible.

From the moment students arrived, the field was full of action. The day kicked off with a high‑energy bootcamp led by JKL alum Chris Recinos, setting the tone for a lineup of activities that included soccer scrimmages, pickleball lessons with professional athletes, and a football skills activation hosted by the Los Angeles Rams. Students rotated through each station, encouraging one another, trying new things, and fully embracing the spirit of the day. We wrapped things up with one of our favorite traditions – the tug‑of‑war tournament, where each program went head‑to‑head in a fun and competitive finish.

Beyond the activities, what stood out most was the sense of camaraderie and connection. Students had the chance to meet peers from other schools, build new friendships, and share in an experience that celebrated both physical wellness and community. The day closed on a powerful note with an inspiring talk from Isaac Jean‑Paul, a visually impaired Paralympic medalist – earning bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, silver at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, and currently training for gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. For many students, it was their first time meeting an Olympian, and hearing his story of perseverance, resilience, and belief in one’s goals left a lasting impression.

It was a meaningful and energized way to close out the program year – reminding us all of what’s possible when students come together, stay active, and support one another.

Student Spotlight: Anthonez Woods – 11th Grade – 3rd Year JKL Student

Anthonez has been part of the JKL community longer than most realize—first joining as an 8th grader when he attended an event with his older brother. From that early introduction, it was clear that Anthonez was someone special, and over the years, he has continued to grow into a student who truly represents what JKL is all about.

Now in his third year with the program, Anthonez brings a consistent energy and curiosity to everything he does. He takes his fitness seriously, is always eager to learn more about nutrition, and understands the importance of maintaining his mental wellbeing. He also shows up with genuine enthusiasm for community service, always ready to give back and be part of something bigger than himself. One thing that stands out most about Anthonez is his gratitude—he has shared how practicing gratitude through JKL has already opened doors for him and shaped the way he approaches life.

As he looks ahead to his senior year, Anthonez has already begun to step into a leadership role among his peers. His growth, mindset, and consistency make him someone others naturally look up to, and his presence continues to have a positive impact on the entire program.

WISE Scholarship Program Update: Hands-On Teamwork: Escape Room Experience

The WISE students recently enjoyed an exciting field trip focused on building teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills through a hands-on escape room experience! Students worked together to solve clues, think critically under pressure, and encourage one another as they raced against the clock. The activity provided a fun and engaging way to strengthen collaboration while highlighting the importance of listening, leadership, and creative thinking. It was wonderful to see students support each other, celebrate successes, and grow stronger as a team outside of the educational setting.
