Partner Spotlight: Hargrove Roofing Internship
This summer, Hargrove Roofing and CEO Billy Hargrove created a life-changing opportunity for three of our JKL students at Juan Navarro Early College High School in Austin, TX. Through a three-month paid internship, students Alexander Rios-Clemente, Austin Dominguez, and Santiago Barrientos stepped far beyond the classroom and into a hands-on learning experience that helped shape their confidence, skills, and future career paths.
Through mentor-mentee guidance, ride-alongs, hands-on roofing education, and real-world sales experience, these students gained far more than job skills – they discovered confidence, communication skills, and a vision for their futures.
JKL Instructor, Alexandria Woods, witnessed firsthand how much they grew:
“Being in an internship like this, they learned how to communicate with people, they learned how to handle rejection. I’ve just seen them grow with their communication skills, their empathy for other people, and face their fears. I just loved to see those 3 months of them changing.”
The impact also extended into their homes. Santiago shared, “My parents think it’s great that I’m working at a young age and making money, so I don’t have to rely on them with everything I need.”
Austin shared how meaningful the experience has been for his family as well:
“My mom likes the internship the most because every time I get home with a check, she’s very proud.”
The Hargrove Roofing team poured into these young men with genuine care. Sales Representative Rafael Martinez reflected: “I wish that when I was their age, someone had said, ‘Here’s a trade you can learn and make a living doing.’”
Branch President Coach Abernathy emphasized the heart behind the partnership:
“This has nothing to do with the bottom line. This is investing in the youth. I just love the fact that we are giving back with no expectations except helping these young people.”
And CEO Billy Hargrove echoed that belief with confidence in the interns’ futures:
“These young guys are going to end up being great professionals in whatever they choose because of experiences like this.”
We extend our deepest thanks to Hargrove Roofing for believing in our students and investing generously in their growth. Opportunities like this embody the true spirit of just keep livin – preparing young people for life beyond high school with real experience, mentorship, and community support.
Program Highlights:
Camp, Connect, Conquer at Allaso Ranch
Our Dallas and Longview JKL programs enjoyed an unforgettable weekend camp adventure at Allaso Ranch in Hawkins, Texas! This special outing brought together students from multiple JKL sites for a meaningful blend of outdoor exploration, personal growth, and classic JKL fun. Throughout the weekend, students stepped outside their comfort zones with activities like zip lining, archery, canoeing, and team‑building challenges designed to build confidence and strengthen communication skills.
For many, it was their first time camping. With supportive staff and peers by their side, students learned new skills, tried new activities, and discovered strengths they didn’t know they had. In between the action, they enjoyed peaceful moments in nature, shared meals, laughter, and meaningful conversations that deepened friendships across both programs.
By the end of the trip, students returned home with a renewed sense of connection, memories they’ll hold onto for years, and a stronger bond with their JKL community. It was a powerful reminder of how transformative shared experiences can be – on and off campus.
Student Spotlight: Alia’Richae Miller
Meet Alia, affectionally known as Chae, a senior at John Adams College & Career Academy in Cleveland, Ohio and a four-year JKL veteran! Chae is the definition of leadership and reliability – one of the kindest and most dedicated students we’ve ever had in the program.
At the start of this school year, we faced a challenge: recruiting new members after many graduates moved on. Chae stepped up in a big way. She personally recruited the highest number of new students for JKL, both during school and at our first open house, and her efforts paid off – those students now attend sessions consistently!
On top of her JKL contributions, Chae is excelling academically, currently ranked #1 in the Senior class of 2026. Her commitment to both her education and her peers makes her a true role model in our program.
WISE Scholarship Program Update: The Power of Us
Two of our WISE participants, Agustin and Fabian, recently traveled to Texas to take part in The Power of Us – the Rangers Foundation’s Mental Health Summit – an opportunity made possible through connections facilitated by the just keep livin Foundation. The summit brought together a powerful network of partners and youth‑focused organizations to create an inspiring, interactive experience centered on mental wellness.
Throughout the day, students rotated through four dynamic sessions led by Everfi, The Defensive Line, the Kevin Love Fund, and even stepped inside the Texas Rangers’ batting cages for a hands‑on activation. Each session emphasized the importance of mental health awareness, resilience, and understanding that young people are more than just their sport.
During lunch, Agustin was invited to participate in a live interview with Dr. Brook Choulet, Concierge Sports & Performance Psychiatrist. He spoke thoughtfully about why mental health awareness matters for teens, the value of open conversations around well‑being, and how last year’s Rangers Mental Health Challenge played a meaningful role in his personal growth and the confidence he carries today.
This experience not only broadened Agustin and Fabian’s understanding of mental health, but also reinforced the WISE program’s mission to empower students with tools, connections, and opportunities that support their overall well‑being—on and off the field.
