JKL Co-Founder Camila Alves McConaughey Wants Kids to “Just Try One Bite”

The healthy eating advocate and founder of Women of Today will release her first book, Just Try One Bite, with co-author Adam Mansbach. The book features a funny role reversal in which picky-eater parents are confronted by their children. Camila writes from experience, as a mom herself to Levi (13), Vida (11), and Livingston (8). “When you get older, it gets harder to kick bad habits,” adds Alves McConaughey. “Just Try One Bite is a fun way to teach those healthy habits early on.” Just Try One Bite will hit shelves on March 22, and is available for pre-order now!

One of my favorite things about Texans is that we like to help ourselves, and while that spirit is still alive and well, a lot of Texans can’t help themselves right now unless we help them. The We’re Texas Virtual Event features an all-star lineup of Texas talent for a night to restore Texas. It’s time.”

In response to unprecedented Winter Storm Uri that devastated the state of Texas in late February, the McConaughey’s organized relief efforts and raised funds through the j.k.livin Foundation Texas Relief Fund.  Their efforts have been providing support for those lacking basic necessities, trying to recover and rebuild in the Lone Star state.  While power has been restored for most, broken water lines and other damage have left many Texans without access to food, clean water and other critical resources.  The proceeds from the We’re Texas Benefit concert will be distributed by the  j.k.livin Foundation Texas Relief Fund to a variety of non-profit organizations including:

  • Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) seeks to glorify Christ by equipping, empowering, and mobilizing a network of churches to respond to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those impacted by disaster. In response to the devastation caused by Winter Storm Uri in the Greater Austin area, ADRN is raising funds to cover costs associated with response efforts. During the storm, ADRN deployed hundreds of volunteers to warming centers and shelters;  mobilized and dispatched hundreds of 4×4 drivers to transport people, food, water, and supplies; equipped shelters with generators, food, water, and baby supplies; helped multiple churches launch shelters in their own communities; and responded to thousands of calls to ADRN’s survivor hotline from people in desperate need of assistance. Additional funds are needed to enable ADRN to continue responding to the immediate and long-term needs of survivors as they mobilized skilled volunteer laborers to repair homes; distribute supplies to those in need; continue managing a massive clean-up and debris removal initiative; and provide survivors with ongoing physical, financial, emotional and spiritual support.
  • Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX) seeks to nourish and enrich the lives of the homebound and other people in need through programs that promote dignity and independent living. Anchored by its signature home-delivered meal program, MOWCTX team members and volunteers provide nutritious meals, safety checks and friendly visits to hungry and isolated seniors in Central Texas. As part of their “More Than a Meal” mission, they also offer other services to enable homebound older adults to age in place with dignity. Their holistic platform includes major home repairs to keep the homes of elders safe and accessible (including repairs after Winter Storm Uri), in-home care assistance for seniors and adults with disabilities, “care calls” to stay connected with lonely seniors by phone and a special program to care for the beloved pets of older adults.
  • Salvation Army of Texas has a presence in every zip code and is uniquely positioned to respond with specialized services based on the needs of each community. Throughout Texas, warming  stations and emergency shelters have been open offering a safe and warm environment, providing food and shelter for those in need during the historically low temperatures and statewide power outages. JKL Students Give Back During the Holiday Season

Our JKL students from Fremont High School in Los Angeles put on a community service event appreciating the essential workers in their schools.

Students safely put together goodie bags and constructed “Thank You” posters and cards for the cafeteria workers who provide food to the community. Goodie bags were delivered to the food workers from LAUSD at Fremont High School in appreciation for all of the hard work that they do for our community.

This idea was sparked during a gratitude zoom session when one of the students talked about how thankful she was to our cafeteria workers who she felt were not recognized for being out in the front lines during the COVID closures. She explained how they provided her family food every day during the lockdown. She talked about how although they have masks on they are very welcoming and always make sure they give her family enough meals, even for her parents.

Our JKL program at East Laurens High School in Dublin honored 4 of their staff members who have served our country by planning a Veterans Day reception at East Laurens High School.

It was important for the Veterans to know how deeply appreciated they are for the sacrifices they have made in their lives to keep our country free. Students decorated each of the staff member’s classroom doors at school and Jaylen, who is one of the JKL members, wrote a poem in their honor.

After decorating the doors, the students invited the four staff members to join their JKL session to share stories and include them in the gratitude circle where all 4 were thanked for their service and sacrifice.

WWE Superstar R-Truth Shares His Truth with jkl Students

just keep livin students and staff tuned in for a very special virtual visit from famed WWE Superstar, R-Truth.

Having been wrestling for over 20 years, R-Truth really opened up to JKL students, sharing his personal story – from his humble beginnings heading down a dangerous path that included jail time for selling drugs, to finding enduring success as a wrestler at the WWE, where he is the current 24/7 Champion in his record 42nd reign.

We had over 100 students and staff join the conversation, some of them even proudly showing off their own R-Truth action figures! They were treated to countless words of wisdom, such as “I had to be my own cheerleader,” “we can move mountains as individuals,” and “your voice is the most important thing you have.” From being a devoted father, to rapping, to his surprising hobby of flying kites, R-Truth seems to do it all.

He emphasized the importance of voting, gave students advice on how to pursue their dreams, and credited his faith and belief in himself for his longevity. When asked about the importance of setting goals, he said “Setting goals gives you ambition. It’s like the dynamite stick you light. You have to plan something before you can execute.” We want to sincerely thank R-Truth, as well as the WWE who sponsors our JKL program at Learning Works Charter, for giving our students this terrific opportunity!
