Student Spotlight: Freddy

JKL alumni Freddy is the example of an ideal student taking the life lessons that he learned from the JKL program and incorporating them into his now college life! Freddy is currently finishing up his freshmen year at California State University Northridge where he is studying Biology. One day, Freddy is hoping to enroll in medical school to become a doctor or surgeon.
During his first semester of college, Freddy volunteered his time with our Hamilton High School JKL program to help encourage students, lead workouts, and participate in events. “I continue to push myself like I did in JKL and I tell myself to keep going, do one more rep. This applied to both my fitness efforts and school work.”
Freddy is an outstanding student who spent all four of his high school years in the JKL program. One of Freddy’s greatest moments in the program was his first day in 9th grade when he learned about the gratitude circle. He then knew it would become a great place for him to express himself.
Alumni like Freddy are a great example that our programs make a positive impact and can motivate and provide support beyond a student’s high school years.

Gratitude Quote of the Month

“I’m grateful for the health of our JKL army! It is our passion that drives our students and our health that allows us to deliver. The way we live and share our passion fuels the fire for each student we serve!”
— Ms. Millette, Eastern Hills

Dodgers Women in Sports Career Sports Panel

The panel included Janet Marie Smith (Senior Vice President, Planning & Development / LA Dodgers), Jennifer Rojas (Senior Manager, Corporate Public Relations/ LA Chargers), Jennifer Pope (Vice President, Community Relations and Kings Care Foundation/ LA Kings), Alice Shing (Vice President, Club Operations and Investor Relations/ LA Football Club), Christine Simmons (President & Chief Operations Officer/ LA Sparks), and Nichol Whiteman (Executive Director/ LA Dodgers Foundation).
Our students were able to hear stories of struggles as well as successes and finding their identity as women in a predominately male industry. It was great for our students to hear this information and learn a few tips on how to go about pursuing their passion.
The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation continues to do such a great job with providing excellent events for our JKL students to experience. We are so grateful for our partnership and look forward to working together to provide more events in the future for the students we serve!

Ripple Visits Venice and Fairfax High School

Our students at Venice and Fairfax High School enjoyed an interactive session with members from the Ripple company who make plant-based dairy-free products. Ripple’s goal is to create a more sustainable future for our planet, use less water, and create a purer protein for healthy living.
The students enjoyed a taste testing session where they sampled non-dairy alternatives like Almond Milk, Coconut Milk, and Soy. The students were able to rate their non-dairy samples on a scale of 1-10 and discuss as a group the taste of the various choices for plant based dairy alternatives.
The students enjoyed sampling, providing feedback, and learning more about plant based nutrition. Our programs would not be possible without the support of the surrounding community and companies like Ripple who come in to speak to our students!

Lauren Conrad – Paper Crown

We would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to Lauren Conrad and her company, Paper Crown, for donating some brand new prom dresses for our JKL girls and some ties and cuff links for our JKL boys! All of the girls were so grateful to have a new dress to wear to prom!
They all were so excited to try on various dresses until they found that one special one! To see their faces light up as they tried on the dresses was a reminder of the positive impact Lauren’s generous donation made on so many of our JKL students!

Tip From Camila

Focus your time and energy on being around people who make you feel good. People who encourage you, build you up, and bring positive energy into your life. Those are the kind of people who are going to help you grow.

Recipe of the month – from Beller Nutrition

Chilled Black Bean Salsa

If you think of yourself as the biggest salsa-lover in the world, I am about to crush that (Sorry, not sorry) Ready? Here it goes: Texans named salsa and tortilla chips their Official State Snack. See, that’s real love right there : ) But if you are not from Texas don’t worry, you can still show off your salsa-loving by thinking big and enjoying this black bean veggie rich version as your entire lunch or dinner meal. You get a mega dose of antioxidant rich veg, protein and fiber from the black beans and amazingly healthy and hunger crushing fats from the fresh avocado. Let’s call it the ‘big bowl of salsa love!’
This recipe is super easy, fresh, filling, and satisfying! Not to mention, packed with a whole lot of nutritious goodness. You can eat it with a handful of toasted tortillas, put it on top of some mixed greens and eat it as a salad, or add it to your scrambled eggs in the morning!
